The Work-Based Learning program is a collaboration between employers and the Genesee Career Institute to provide Genesee County’s Career Technical Education students with hands-on experiences that help them master the skills sets learned in a GCI program. Work-Based Learning placements are flexible. The employer may engage with a student for one week to several months. The learning experience may be paid or unpaid at the employer’s discretion.

Placement of students in Work-Based Learning experiences is coordinated by the Genesee Career Institute through a training agreement with employers. Employers provide the learner with hands-on, real world experience involving sustained, meaningful interactions with industry professionals. Under the guidance of adult mentors, students learn to solve problems and meet employers’ expectations.

The Benefits of Work-Based Learning

  • Employers identify and train and hire potential employees at no cost or low-cost to the employer.

  • Students discover high-demand careers and employers available right in their communities.

  • Employers mentor students, teach them about their career field, and prepare them with knowledge and work skills.

  • Students acquire valuable work experience in their field of interest that helps influence their career path.

  • Employers help strengthen demand-driven workforce development programs for local youth.
